The highly partisan trial saw Democrats senators voting on one side to convict president Donald Trump on his phone call to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, on July 25, 2019, asking Ukraine to investigate the alleged corruption claims against Hunter Biden and his involvement in Borima Holdings, a Ukrainian from the son of the former vice President of the United States and the front-running candidate for the Democrats presidential nomination Joe Biden, worked for between 2014 - 2019. The Democrats called Trump’s actions as a political conspiracy, aimed at halting the political progress of his potential rival in the 2020 poll. To further strengthen their case the Democrats argued that withholding military grant to Ukraine was a way of forcing the hand of Zelensky to meddle in the affairs US 2020 elections.

But the Republican on their own end voted unanimously to acquit the president of any wrongdoing on the July 25th phone call.

A new twist was added to the unfolding drama, as Mitch Romney, the former presidential nominee of the Republican, boldly voted against President Trump in the first count charges brought before the senate by the Democrats on obstruction of justice. Romney’s vote was the major talking point of the trial in a process that has not been shy of flashpoints.

President Trump on his hand twitted in reaction minutes after the trial to congratulate the US citizen on the victory in what he called the ‘’HOAX’’ process.

If there is one thing this impeachment has done, is to further highlight the sharp division existing in the United States political scene.
